With only twenty minutes left to uncover a definitive clue and catch up to Hugo, Ruth waved Greg on, and they hurried down an embankment, away from the fence, and toward the train sheds. All the while, Ruth kept a close eye on the police officer standing sentry out front. So far, she hadnât had cause to turn in their direction.
When the two of them reached the side of the first shed, out of sight of the officer, Ruth allowed herself a few calming breaths.
She beamed at Greg and whispered, âAll this feels so delightfully bad, doesnât it? Itâs like weâre a couple of spies.â Her insides squirmed with excitement.
Greg shook his head. âNo government would want us working for them.â
âOh, I donât know.â Ruth pointed farther down the shed and motioned for Greg to follow. âOnce they get a load of my boiled sweets laced with cyanide, the dart-firing lipstick, and my handbag with the concealed grenade launcher, theyâll jump at the chance.â She reached the corner, held up a hand, then peered around it.
The back yard stood empty, save for a couple of skips. There were only fire exit doors and no windows at the rear of the buildings.
Ruth swore under her breath and pulled back.
âLanguage,â Greg muttered.
âNo way in. Fire exits donât have handles on the outside.â
âWe can go, then?â Greg asked with a hopeful expression.
Ruth pursed her lips. âWe need a distraction.â
He groaned. âYou do realise there could be like fifty more police officers inside.â
âI donât think so. Itâs too quiet. The three officers we saw in there earlier have gone. Itâs only that one standing guard for now.â Ruth took a steadying breath. âI bet the crime scene team wonât be back here until later today.â She glanced at Greg. âWe need to get into the shed without anyone spotting us.â
âWonât someone have locked it? The train carriage, I mean. Sealed?â
âOnly one way to find out.â Ruth pressed her back against the wall and thought it through.
The female officer looked youngâearly twentiesâwhich meant she likely hadnât had much experience on the force. However, the newest recruits tended to be the most eager and attentive to their surroundings.
Ruth shimmied her way along the wall and peered round the corner again, to the front of the sheds. She eyed the crates to the left of the officer, and the police tape strung across the open roller door behind her.
The side door to that was closed, so no way to tell if someone had locked it too, but no tape secured it shut either. A good sign. The connecting door at the nearest end was also closed.
âI have an incredible idea.â With a rush of enthusiasm, Ruth beckoned Greg close, and then whispered her plan in his ear, making sure to spell out exactly how the events should go, step by step.
When she was done, Greg shook his head. âNo way Iâm doing that. Youâre crazy. Lost your mind. Thatâs the worst plan Iâve ever heard.â He glared at her.
